Varsity Football: Conquerors Come from Behind to Defeat 6A Columbia 28-21

Fifteen unanswered points in the fourth quarter propelled the Conquerors from an eight-point deficit to a seven-point lead, and the defense stood strong in the final five minutes as TCA Conquerors Varsity Football came from behind to defeat a powerful force in the Class 6A Columbia High School Tigers.

Treyaun Webb‘s 13-yard touchdown run with 4:49 left on the clock was the difference as it broke a 21-21 tie. Webb swept around the left end in forging his way into the end zone for the game-winning score.

Webb also scored the touchdown that pulled Trinity to within two at 21-19 with a seven-yard burst into the end zone. He broke two tackles and reached across the goal line with shear determination. Officials had to make sure the ball broke the plane as he came down right on top of the goal line. Thomas Fryer then stormed through the #5 hole for the two-point conversion that tied the score with 8:13 left to play.

Webb scored three touchdowns on the night; the first came on a 1-yard rush to put Trinity ahead 13-7 with 6:47 remaining in the second quarter. The extra point was blocked, and that single missed point forced Trinity to go for two to tie it up at 21-21.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter. Trinity scored after only three plays in which Fryer rushed three times for 46 yards, beginning with a 28-yarder, after the defense forced a three-and-out following the opening kickoff. Fryer finished the short, quick drive with a seven-yard power run up the middle.

Columbia, though, answered later in the period on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Ty Wehinger to Marcus Peterson.

Columbia took the lead just 1:19 before halftime on a two-yard touchdown pass from Kade Jackson to Jaden Williams and the extra point from Bryant Rigdon.

The Wehinger/Peterson duo struck again with 8:22 left in the third quarter on a 33-yard catch-and-run during which Peterson evaded several tacklers before scampering past the pylon. The extra point put Columbia up 21-13, but the Trinity defense would not allow another Tiger to score.

Trinity DB Caden Morrell chased down the quarterback for a 6-yard sack with just over three minutes remaining to end Columbia’s last-ditch effort to tie the score.

Morrell had nine total tackles on the night, including two for losses.

Webb finished the night with 131 yards and 3 touchdowns on 27 carries. Fryer rushed 11 times for 79 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Jacory Jordan was 4 for 14 for 50 yards passing and compiled 40 yards of his own on the ground.

Whereas Trinity had the far better ground game, Columbia did its work through the air. Quarterbacks Wehinger and Jackson combined for a 12-for-19 performance for 169 yards and three scores. On the ground, though, Trinity’s defense held the Tigers to -8 total rushing yards. Jailen Brown led Columbia with 39 yards rushing, but 10 Trinity tackles for 44 yards lost more than nullified Brown’s total.

Lucius Lattimore totaled eight tackles for the Conquerors, including a sack, and both Niles Johnson and Bryce Capers notched solo sacks while Tito Butler and Jahron Williams teamed up for one sack.

The Conquerors will play their next two games at home before hitting the road for the first time. Trinity will host North Florida Educational Institute for Senior Night on Friday, October 2, and 8A Mandarin High School on October 9. A road trip to South Florida’s Plantation American Heritage Academy will follow on October 17.
