Varsity Football: Conquerors Clinch District Title with 55-10 Win over Providence

Defensive takeaways on the opponents’ first two possessions set the tone early, and the Conquerors never let up as Trinity Christian Academy defeated crosstown rival Providence 55-10 to extend their undefeated streak and clinch the Class 1M, District 1 title.

The win was also the 13th in a row for the Conquerors dating back to last season.

The Trinity defense intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble on each of Providence’s first two possessions, and the offense turned both takeaways into touchdowns.

First, cornerback Kyle Boylston picked off a pass on the game’s second play from scrimmage to set up the first score. Receiver London Smith caught a 29-yard pass from quarterback Tyrone Summerall as part of the 4-play, 56-yard drive. The other three plays were Treyaun Webb runs, on which he totaled 37 yards and scored from 1 yard out to put Trinity on the board.

On the ensuing Providence drive, Elijah Crocker forced a fumble that Tomarion McCray recovered on the 13. On 2nd and 10, Darnell Rogers went the distance for the touchdown.

The Conquerors were not through. The defense then forced three consecutive incomplete passes and a punt to set up 1st and 10 at the Trinity 42. Webb culminated the 58-yard drive with a 27-yard touchdown run, and the Conquerors led 21-0 after the first quarter.

Webb would add one more touchdown run – a 74-yarder that earned Channel 4’s Football Friday Play of the Night honors – in the second before taking the rest of the night off. He finished with 141 yards and 3 scores on only 6 carries. Rogers got a little more action in the third quarter and turned in a 77-yard touchdown run before he departed to allow the younger Conquerors to finish the game. Rogers totaled 142 yards and 2 TDs on 6 carries.

After Gavin Nowlan-McFarlane’s 27-yard field goal put Providence on the board, Summerall connected on a short pass with Seth Bialek, who caught the ball and raced 48 yards for the score. Tadarius Washington also rushed one in from 13 yards.

The defensive play of the night came from linebacker Cam Anderson, who intercepted a second-quarter pass and returned the ball 44 yards for the touchdown. Anderson also had 9 tackles to give himself 108, which is good for 14th in the state of Florida and #1 in Class 1M.

Providence got a late touchdown on a 42-yard pass from Mason Williams to Jett Hood with 2:22 left on the clock.

Summerall was 3 for 8 for 92 yards, 1 TD, and a quarterback rating of 120.8. He completed two passes to Bialek for 63 yards and a score. Bialek was also 7 for 7 in PAT attempts. Washington rushed 5 times for 45 yards and a touchdown.

The undefeated Conquerors (9-0) will close out the regular season at home against Quincy’s Munroe High School (4-5). A win could mean a bye-week in the opening round of the Class 1M, Region 1 playoffs on November 11.
