Varsity Football: Conquerors Advance to Region Final with 44-7 Win

The top-seeded Trinity Christian Academy Conquerors returned to form with a resounding 44-7 win over the #4 Panthers of St. John Paul II Catholic School in the semifinal round of the Florida Class 2A, Region 1 playoff Friday night on the home turf. Trinity scored early and often, including a special team’s play worthy of city-wide recognition.

The win means the Conquerors will continue their trek for back-to-back state championships as they advance to the region final on November 26.

Treyaun Webb had a breakthrough performance and earned Player of the Game honors. Webb scored 3 touchdowns and rushed for 215 yards on 13 carries for an average of 16.54 yards per carry.

Scoring Summary

Webb started the scoring with the first of his 3 touchdowns on Trinity’s first possession. He stormed 23 yards for the score to cap a 7-play, 80-yard drive that put the Conquerors ahead 7-0 (Seth Bialek PAT) with 7:54 remaining in the first quarter.

Only 2:03 into the second, Webb raced for his biggest play of the season when he outran the defense for a 58-yard touchdown run that put Trinity ahead 30-0.

In between Webb’s first 2 scoring runs was what became Channel 4’s Play of the Week. With 0:06 left in the first quarter, the Panthers set up for a 46-yard field goal attempt. The kick was tipped at the line and fell 11 yards short of the goal post. Cam Anderson caught the ball at the 1, swept to the left sideline and raced untouched 99 yards for a very rare missed-field goal return for a touchdown. With Bialek’s extra point, Trinity led 21-0 at the end of the first period.

Only 1:07 into the second, the Conquerors’ defense got its second safety of the season when the Panthers lost the ball in their own end zone. The Panthers recovered, but Trinity scored the 2 points to make the score 23-0.

Webb added his final touchdown at the 4:32 mark of the third quarter with a 17-yard scamper that gave the Conquerors a running clock with the score 44-7.

Also rushing for touchdowns were Darnell Rogers and Elijah Crocker. Rogers got his on a 14-yard end around to the left side. He totaled 31 yards on 4 carries overall.

Crocker’s Big Sequence

Crocker had his first big moments as a varsity running back. On only 7 carries, the sophomore amassed 71 yards and a touchdown. He garnered most of those yards on a 10-play, 80-yard drive near the end of the second quarter when he ran multiple times. Crocker got the ball to the 1 on an 18-yard run then took it into the endzone on the next play for his first varsity touchdown.

Further Notes

The defense limited St. John Paul II to 148 total yards and only 61 on the ground without allowing a point. The Panthers scored their only touchdown on a 98-yard interception returned all the way by Zion Paret. Tremaine Hughes was 6 for 18 for 70 yards for the Panthers, and Colin Hurley was 6 for 15 for 38 yards for the Conquerors. Both quarterbacks had 2 passes intercepted. SJP’s Malachi Hardy threw one pass for 17 yards.
